What do a highway underpass and a rave have in common? They both have exciting, bright, colorful lights — in downtown Louisville at least.

The I-65 underpass on Main Street, between Jackson and Hancock Streets, now has LED lighting. Unveiled last week, the project is part of a $1.6 million plan to add LED lights to two other underpasses downtown, at Jefferson Street and Jackson Street.

Much like the Big Four Bridge, the lights of the underpass can change color dynamically, and will be used to celebrate local events, sports teams, or holidays — think: the lights will be purple after a big LouCity or Racing win, or red + green during the holiday season.

The new lights, paid for by federal funding, are designed to increase visibility and safety. A timeline for the other two underpass installations has not been announced.
