Nov 07, 2024Decorative lighting will be installed in two alleyways in Owen Sound’s River District.
On Monday, Owen Sound council passed bylaws to enter agreements with property owners along Carney’s Lane and Artists’ Alley to allow for the installation of catenary lighting in the two areas.
The lights suspended on cables will be purchased and installed through a one-time funding commitment of up to $15,000 approved by the River District Board of Management.
In a report from River District Coordinator Viveca Gravel, it said the lighting can make a space feel safer, has been shown to increase safety through an increase in foot traffic and will create a more welcoming atmosphere in what are connection points from parking to the main street.
In Carney’s Lane, the catenary lighting will replace lighted arches that were installed in 2008, but have now exceeded their lifespan and are being removed, according to the report.
“This may seem like a simple thing, but I think the impact is significant,” Coun. Brock Hamley said. “We know that well-lit streets aren’t just functional, they create a sense of safety and welcome for everyone who walks them.
“Carney’s Lane is a key route from our main parking areas to the heart of the River District and right now it lacks the visibility to feel safe and inviting, especially during the darker months.”
The neighbouring landowners on the north and south sides of the alleys – The Highrise Group Inc., Grey Bruce Property Rentals Inc., and Sundays Service Inc. — have been presented agreements, the report noted.
Staff plan to notify River District businesses of the pending installation and the city plans to distribute a media advisory to the community once installation starts, according to the report.
