HBO‘s Green Lantern series has cast Kelly Macdonald in a series regular role, Variety has learned.
Macdonald joins previously announced series leads Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in the series, which is titled “Lanterns.” Per the official logline, the show follows “new recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
Macdonald will star as Sheriff Kerry, who is described as “a no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town. Her resilience, shaped by a complex past that’s hardened her resolve, anchors her when the community’s secrets begin to surface.”
The role marks a return to HBO for Macdonald, as she previously starred in the premium cabler’s period gangster drama “Boardwalk Empire.” She received an Emmy nomination for the series in 2011. Macdonald also won an Emmy in 2006 for the TV movie “The Girl in the Cafe.” Her other TV credits include “Giri/Haji,” “The Victim,” and “Black Mirror.” In film, she is known for roles in features like “No Country for Old Men,” “Gosford Park,” and “Brave.”
She is repped by CAA and Independent Talent Group.
The show is produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios and is based on DC’s “Green Lantern” comics. It was picked up for eight episodes at HBO in June. Originally intended as a Max original, the show shifted to HBO as part of a new content delineation plan.
“Lanterns” is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. All three serve as executive producers along with James Hawes, with Hawes also directing the first two episodes.
